I assisted a teacher at an art studio, which held classes for inner-city kids. She gently instructed the kindergarten students to “wake up the colors” by squeezing small drops of water from the paintbrush onto each watercolor pigment. Then after swirling the soft brush, it glided on the paper. Upon seeing kids stab (or paint as if they were using crayons) she said, “Let’s try pushing the water. Push the paint.”
